Watkins Glen State Park

Todd and I went on our longest motorcycle trip to date, and camped over night. It was amazing.

Since getting a motorcycle it’s been a dream of mine to travel across the country on it. I was inspired mainly by this guy, who has the privilege of being a school teacher and does this every summer. As a test run, we’ve been talking about doing a shorter trip down to Florida this summer. To get a feeling for timing, we figured we could shoot for an average of 200 miles a day. Keep in mind, the longest that we’ve ridden in one day has been about 100 miles so I had no idea of whether or not we could comfortably do that. After this weekend, I’m sure we can.

For the past 2 weekends Todd and I have gone hiking in an effort to get outside and exercise a bit more. We’ve had a blast, and when our bartender friend Katie showed us some photos of Watkins Glen State Park we decided to head there next. At 250 miles, and 4 1/2 hours away, we knew we would have to camp overnight. This made it a perfect test for the long ride and camp scenario we’d find ourselves in on our way down to Florida. The journey was long, but fun. I got us a set of helmet intercoms a while back, and so with music and conversation, the ride went pretty smoothly.

We made it to camp without a hitch, but quickly discovered that both my camera, and Todd’s GoPro were mysteriously out of juice… So we have no ride footage, and only iPhone photos for the whole weekend :-/ Nonetheless we had a great time, and learned a lot.

Lesson 1: Pull batteries out of all packed electronics to make sure the batteries aren’t dead when you get to where you’re going.

Lesson 2: Two people taking a nap in a hammock is not the same as 2 people sleeping in one. We will be using separate ones next time.

We got to the campsite at the perfect time. We had just enough time to walk the Gorge Trail, get dinner in town, and walk back. In high school those cheesy “Ithaca is Gorges” t-shirts were really popular and I always thought they were terrible. While I still think they’re not punny, I get what they were talking about. I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon, but Todd has and will corroborate that this was like a lush, miniature version…

All in all, it was a fantastic trip, and I’ve already reached out to some friends I’d like to take with us next time we go.

Trivia Tuesday Doodles

Yesterday was tuesday, which means I spent the evening at Mikie’s Squared in Hoboken playing trivia. Recently when there’s been space, and I haven’t been too impared, I’ve taken to doodling while we play. Some nights this involves several people coming up to me to either accuse me of cheating, or ask what I’m doing. Naturally, I don’t get much doodling done on those nights. Luckily last night was quiet and I was able to get some neat cartoons of the locals! Jess is my knitting friend, and font of trivia knowledge. ( Jess I’m sorry your head is kind of small, I’m just noticing that now… ) Richie is one of the random locals that plays every week. He’s there so often I know his name, but haven’t actually talked to him. Katie is our friend-of-a-friend and best bartender ever. She also models on the side, you might recognize her from the cover of Psychology Today.
